Frequently Asked Questions About HOT’s Earthquake Relief Support

As with any disaster of this magnitude, there has been an outpouring of empathy and intense desire to support earthquake relief efforts in Türkiye. Everyone is asking “How can I help?” Of course, those who want to help have more specific questions. With this post, we are sharing the most frequently asked questions and responses about House of Türkiye’s earthquake relief support.

Q: What is HOT doing to support the earthquake relief?

The day after the earthquake, House of Türkiye at Balboa Park launched a campaign to inform, engage, and call for support.  The first action was to create an Earthquake Relief Fund.

The second action was to schedule and coordinate an event, with other local Turkish American organizations, at the HOT cottage in Balboa Park.  The ceremony which took place on February 11th was intended to honor those we lost in the earthquake and to raise funds for relief aid. You can watch the coverage of the event from these news segment coverages here: San Diego Fox Channel 5, San Diego ABC 10, San Diego CBS 8, NBC San Diego 7.

The third action was to keep the HOT cottage open during the week. Normally the international cottages at Balboa Park are only open at weekends. With HPR’s permission, the House of Türkiye cottage will remain open every weekday until March 5th. Support from visitors has been amazing so far!

Q: How will donations made to House of Türkiye impact the earthquake relief efforts?

A: 100% of the donations made to the HOT Earthquake Relief Fund will be directed to a vetted, local emergency support organization for assistance with the most immediate needs of the survivors. Donations will be matched up to $100,000. House of Türkiye is committed to transparent reporting and will update you on how the donations to the relief fund are used.

Q: Can I make donations other than money? How about clothing or supplies?

A: Clothing donations or other items are not accepted by House of Türkiye at this time. We do not have the means to deliver such donations for earthquake relief. Please do NOT drop off such donations in front of the HOT cottage at Balboa Park. Thank you.

Q: Is my earthquake relief donation tax deductible?

A: House of Türkiye is a tax-exempt organization under Section 501(c)(3) of the Internal Revenue Code (EIN #14-199114). Your donation may be tax deductible.  Please consult with your tax or legal advisor on your specific situation.

Q: Can I have my company match my donation?

A: Absolutely. Many companies participate in Corporate Charitable Donation programs. Please request a donation match from your employer if your company has such a program. House of Türkiye will be happy to confirm your donation and satisfy any requirements your company may have.
